Water Damage Practice Standards
S-500 ANSI/IICRC S500-2015 provides a specific set of practical standards for water damage restoration. It does not attempt to teach comprehensive water damage restoration procedures; rather, it provides the foundation for basic principles of proper restoration practices.
Water Damage is categorized as one of the following three types:
- Clean Water does not contain harmful contaminants. Clean water damage most commonly is from rainwater.
- Gray Water has some level of contamination in it. It could be when a household appliance that has a water supply line such as a dishwasher, refrigerator, or washing machine floods over.
- Black Water has harmful contaminants and should not come in contact with your skin. Black water caused by overflows of toilet waste or sewer backups are more often referred to as Sewage Cleanup. Other black water can be the result of a flood from a natural disaster.
